Academic Startup Competition 2026

Last week marked the final phase of the Academic Startup Competition 2026, a national competition of ten promising academic ventures from across the Netherlands.

The Academic Startup Competition highlights startups that are translating scientific research into real-world impact. After an intensive Pitch Day, ten teams were selected for the ASC26 winning cohort based on the strength of their innovation, clarity of vision and potential to scale internationally. The selected startups followed the final phase of the program, where sharpened their strategy, expanded their network and had international exposure, including the U.S. preparation track.

This year’s cohort included two YES!Delft startups: Fluxthor and FrostByte.

Fluxthor is developing ultra-precise, energy-efficient motion and actuation systems for applications such as semiconductor equipment, optical systems and scientific instruments. The company builds on TU Delft research and patented reluctance actuator technology to support high-precision positioning with minimal heat dissipation.

FrostByte is working on cryogenic electronics for scalable quantum technologies. Spun out of Delft’s quantum ecosystem, the company develops cryogenically operated control electronics designed to bring key parts of quantum computer control infrastructure closer to the processor, helping address wiring, heat and scalability challenges.

The full ASC26 winning cohort reflects the breadth of academic entrepreneurship in the Netherlands, spanning photonics, biotechnology, quantum, medtech, sustainability and advanced instrumentation:

  • Aluvia Photonics — developing an aluminium oxide photonics platform for photonic integrated circuits.

  • Constellate Proteomics — building protein analysis tools for faster and more efficient biopharma development.

  • Fluxthor — designing high-precision, energy-efficient actuation systems for nanoscale applications.

  • FrostByte — developing cryogenic electronics solutions for scalable quantum technologies.

  • modAlgae — using microalgae to create sustainable glycogen ingredients for skincare and personal care.

  • Myriagon — developing next-generation, non-addictive oral analgesics for neuropathic pain.

  • Puform — enabling fast, contactless measurement of fluid properties such as viscosity, density and surface tension.

  • Tolvac Therapeutics — developing tolerogenic therapies that aim to treat autoimmune diseases at their root cause.

  • Twente Medical Optics — advancing handheld laser-based blood perfusion imaging for medical diagnostics and surgery.

  • UCANACT — building digital brain-computer interface technology to help users with severe communication limitations.

Being selected for ASC26 is a strong recognition of the scientific depth and commercial potential behind these ventures. For Fluxthor and FrostByte, it also underlines the continued strength of Delft’s deeptech pipeline: research-driven startups tackling technically complex problems with clear societal and industrial relevance.
