Luckily, DeNoize has created an innovative solution. They found that most noise comes from the windows, so they developed Harmony Glass – a type of active noise-canceling glass with added software that allows you to filter specific noises. For example, you can still enjoy the sound of rain while blocking out disruptive noises. Their goal? To make the ambience in our homes more relaxing and healthier.
From idea to prototype
Aman Jindal, originally from India and now living in the Netherlands for 11 years, became intrigued by noise during his studies. After graduating, he spent six months in London researching how noise pollution impacts society. While much research focused on reducing noise at the source – think quieter airplanes or cars – Aman saw an opportunity from the receiver’s side: minimizing noise exposure in busy residential areas, especially near airports. He recognized a technology gap.
Together with Olivier Schevin, he founded DeNoize to tackle this issue. Their research showed that most noise enters through windows. To combat this, they considered two options: place a heavy obstacle in front of the window – impractical and not feasible – or cancel the noise actively by generating anti-noise. At the time, noise cancelling was only used in headphones. However, DeNoize made a breakthrough and built an active noise-canceling technology for 3D environments in just five years.
When we tested our first prototype that worked, I almost couldn’t believe it. I thought someone had turned off the speaker that produced the noise equivalent to an airplane and was making fun of us, but the noise-cancelling glass had actually stopped the sound. It worked! That was an amazing moment.
Smart Glass: personalized noise control
DeNoize went beyond just noise-cancelling glass. They developed smart glass that protects against sound and allows users to filter specific background noises while still hearing others, such as nature sounds. The glass and its software offer several modes like “sleep mode,” tailoring the sound environment to your needs.
Just as we manage heat, humidity, and lighting for a healthy living environment, we believe sound should be carefully controlled to enhance comfort and well-being.
Scaling Up: from prototype to market
DeNoize completed the YES!Delft Accelerator program in 2019 and established office space there because they appreciated the community. Engaging with other co-founders, sharing insights, and utilizing YES!Delft’s professional network greatly assisted them in progressing. After five years of development, they are now prepared to expand and enter the market, beginning with the existing homes in the Netherlands.
As a teaser, in collaboration with Schiphol, DeNoize built a house near the airport fitted with their windows and technology. Soon, everyone will have the chance to visit and experience firsthand how noise-cancelling glass and different sound modes can transform a living space. Stay tuned for the opening!
