VEMS BV: Simplifying energy transitions

Published
By Renee Moezelaar - The energy transition is in full swing, but this push towards greener energy also causes problems. The electricity grid is congested, prices fluctuate and it is hard for companies to find their way in the maze of sustainable energy without compromising their revenues. On the other end, the installers of these solutions often lack the tools to effectively guide their clients through this complex transition. With their online platform, VEMS hopes to simplify the process for both.

According to VEMS CEO and co-founder Dominique Balassi the key to solving this problem is to see the energy transition as a digital transition. The platform VEMS created models the energy usage of businesses, and gives clear insight into possible improvements and their costs. It connects installers to businesses and minimizes the hassle that often still comes with transitioning to sustainable energy. With this solution, VEMS hopes to make the energy transition smoother and faster.

Inevitable

For Balassi, starting a company like VEMS was almost inevitable. From a young age, he was inspired by the entrepreneurship of his father, and wanted to maximize his impact in this world. After he moved to the Netherlands for a master of Sustainable Energy Technology at Delft University, he got to know the problems of the Dutch energy system, and set out to solve this with his love of digitalization. He joined forces with his colleagues Luca Agnese, Carlo Foglia and Vito Mola developed the first version of the online platform, and founded VEMS.

Many business owners in the Netherlands are lost when it comes to energy transition. The installers, who should guide them, have too many factors to consider and the data exchange is a mess. We want to help these people to make the transition easier.Dominique Balassi, CEO and co-founder VEMS

Where to start

The VEMS platform is mainly targeted to installers looking to help their clients transition to sustainable energy solutions. VEMS provides the tools to quickly design energy systems tailored to each business, and makes clear for them the benefits of their investment. Additionally VEMS optimizes the efficiency of these systems in real time, making business cases more attractive. Over the past year, VEMS ran many pilots, assisting over 20 businesses in optimizing their energy assets.

We really feel like we have a good market solution, and I see big smiles on people that I show the platform to. We hope to simplify the process, not only for companies in the Netherlands but also for countries that will have to transition to sustainable energy in the future.Dominique Balassi, CEO and co-founder VEMS

Essential growth

For Balassi, joining YES!Delft was essential to the growth of the company. He is happy YES!Delft is open to the ideas of new, young entrepreneurs and helps them thrive. VEMS joined the validation lab last year and is now part of the accelerator program. These programs have helped them to get a clear view of the problem that they are trying to solve and connect to the right stakeholders to get the company where it is now.

The connections helped VEMS find a strategic investor and subsidies that can help them move towards the next step. They are now finishing the beta testing of their online platform, and hope to launch at the beginning of March. With this launch, Balassi hopes to reach more companies, and he invites everyone interested in knowing more about their platform to contact him.
