In cooperation with funeral distribution partners like JC Atkinsons, the mushroom coffin can be ordered for same day delivery. It is 100% natural and will biodegrade within 45 days – leaving the earth enriched and nature thriving. The Loop Living Cocoon™ is now officially certified by the Funeral Furnishing Manufacturer’s Association (FFMA) and a sustainable alternative for the traditional coffin. It can be used for any type of cremation or burial, including green funerals. Loop Biotech’s invention provides the most natural way to complete the circle of life.
Novel view
Loop Biotech, founded in the Netherlands five years ago, is offering a novel view on funeral traditions. The company has developed a sustainable, living design, supporting a healthy future for people and planet. Besides the Loop Living Cocoon™ coffin, the innovative Dutch company offers the Loop ForestBed™ carrier and the Loop EarthRise™ urn. All Loop-products are living objects grown from upcycled hemp and mycelium, the underground root network of mushrooms. Several of the more sustainable funeral homes in the United Kingdom have already worked with Loop Biotech and as of today, Loop’s sustainable funeral solutions are available nationwide. For now, the products are created in the growing facility in Delft, the Netherlands, and stored across the UK for distribution.
A thing of beauty
Last year, Nick Leighton laid his son, Social Scientist Max Leighton, to rest in the Loop Living Cocoon™: “The pod was a natural choice in so many ways. Max had great interest in the Wood Wide Web, nature’s underground network of fungi connecting trees. Not only is the cocoon a thing of beauty it also symbolizing rebirth. None of the alternatives seemed appropriate.” London based funeral directors Poetic Endings were the first in the UK to offer Loop Biotech’s products: “It was truly moving to use the mycelium coffin and witness how it resonated with the family. We are incredibly excited to partner with Loop Biotech for the official launch of their ground-breaking innovation. Their products represent a powerful shift towards sustainability and environmental consciousness within the funeral industry.”
Growing demand
Bob Hendrikx, CEO and founder of Loop Biotech: “During my research at Technical University Delft, I discovered that mycelium is nature’s biggest recycler, continuously transforming dead organic matter into valuable nutrients for nature – making it the perfect material for a self-composting, natural coffin. We launched five years ago in the Netherlands and have been addressing the growing demand for biodegradable funeral products that enrich nature ever since. Teaming up with partners in the UK is an important step towards making our biodegradable and earth-enriching solutions available internationally. Together, we can create an organic source of new life. Sustainable funeral products help making the earth more livable, for us and generations to come. Let’s close the Loop!”
About Loop Biotech
Loop Biotech is the initiator and bio-designer of the world’s first ‘living’ coffin, part of a new generation funeral products enriching the earth. The company was founded in the Netherlands by Bob Hendrikx and Lonneke Westhoff in 2020, after he successfully designed the mushroom coffin during his graduation project at Technical University Delft. Loop participated in the YES!Delft accelerator and aims to restore our balance with nature by providing eco-friendly products on an international scale, starting with the funeral industry. The Loop Living Cocoon™ is a groundbreaking, innovative and sustainable alternative for the traditional coffin. It is grown in seven days and in ideal conditions, fully absorbed by nature in only 45 days. The introduction of the mushroom coffin and later carrier (Loop ForestBed™) and urn (Loop EarthRise™) are the answer to the growing demand for nature-friendly funeral solutions.
