Introduction
A tremor is an involuntary shake of a body part, often expressed in the hands. 45 million people worldwide with Parkinson’s Disease and Essential Tremor experience severe tremors all day long. Even though the tremor itself is harmless, it causes serious difficulties in activities of daily living (ADL), such as eating, drinking and writing.
Current treatment options are not effective: medication has limited tremor reduction with severe side-effects and assistive devices are task-specific and bulky. STIL provides the solution by developing an anti-tremor wrist brace. This lightweight, compact wearable makes use of the concept of noise-cancelling. Applying an 'anti-vibration' to the arm actively counteracts the tremor and thus stabilizes the hand, without impairing voluntary motion. In this way, the brace could help millions of people worldwide who struggle with tremors on a daily basis.
